IC:

Character name: Jawbreaker
Fandom: My Little Pony (original character)
Timeline: Mid-season 3, at which point Jawbreaker has been in Ponyville for around a year
Age: Roughly equivalent to 18 in pony years. When questioned about the ages of the show’s main cast, creator Lauren Faust said she viewed the mane six as young adults with a maturity level anywhere around that of 12-18 year olds. Jawbreaker is intended to be nearing the tail-end of that scale, being slightly older/more mature (ha) than the mane six and thus further advanced in her pursuit of her special talent.

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:

Jawbreaker is an Earth pony. While she lacks the ability to fly or interact with clouds like a Pegasus or utilise magic like a Unicorn, Earth ponies have an innate connection with nature and thus play a big role in the care of plants and animals. Jawbreaker has an innate confidence working with basic nature-based tasks. She keeps plants as a hobby and would have participated in season-changing events during her time in Ponyville such as the Running Of The Leaves (in which a race through the town is held so that the ponies running causes the leaves to fall from the trees at the end of Autumn) and Winter Wrap Up (the job of Earth Ponies being to wake animals from hibernation and help them to adjust to the new year, sew seeds and prepare the fields for harvest).

It is suggested throughout MLP that Earth ponies have natural physical ability that Pegasus and Unicorns lack, as Earth ponies are frequently depicted doing heavy-duty manual labor and have displayed remarkable feats of strength such as pulling trains (or in one episode, pulling full-sized buildings behind them or breaking through barricades). As a sportswoman, Jawbreaker is especially strong, putting her in the same league as other notably physical canon characters such as Applejack and Rainbow Dash. When you consider how a notably non-athletic character such as Rarity has been seen carrying a boulder twice her size and goodness knows how many times her weight on her bare back with no assistance of her unicorn magic, you can imagine the feats of physical ability an athletic pony such as Jawbreaker may be able to pull off.

Ponies are also shown to be remarkably robust and with insane healing ability. In the episode Read It and Weep, Rainbow Dash is hospitalised after breaking her wing via crash-landing. Despite her x-ray clearly showing a fracture in one of the bones, she is required not to fly for only a week. In Feeling Pinkie Keen, Twilight Sparkle undergoes much physical trauma, at one point being depicted in bandages and a wheelchair, only to be without both a scene later. It’s unclear what period of time the events of the episode take place over, but it’s more evidence to support what is later shown in Read It and Weep, which is how quickly ponies can recover from major injury.

Their hooves are also shown to be much stronger than that of real life equines, as in Return of Harmony Part 1 Rarity is seen digging through solid stone with her bare hooves with apparently no ill-effect. They are also curiously dexterous, as while they are often seen using their mouths for manipulating objects, ponies appear to have little issue holding or “grasping” objects in their hooves, or holding objects using their “wrists”. The less said about that weird little spectacle, the better.

How would they use their abilities?:

On the Thor there will be little use for Jawbreaker’s natural connection with nature, save for tending to her own potted plants once she manages to acquire some for her apartment, though she may be able to give basic entry-level advice to other characters who are having nothing but woe with trying to get their plants to flourish. It should be noted that while Jawbreaker has the predisposition to be comfortable working with nature, she’s no expert either.

Her strength is obviously best utilised in the contact sports Jawbreaker loves so much, but it also comes in handy for every day tasks. Jawbreaker would be likely to excel at Missions requiring great physical strength (though hopefully not requiring hands), and would be glad to assist other residents of the Thor with tasks such as ferrying heavy objects from one place to another on her back, giving them lifts to places, or breaking down their doors for them should they lose their card-keys.

Her natural healing ability is of course a great advantage to her particular line of sport. Contact and combat sports are near impossible to participate in without garnering yourself an injury or two over the course of your sporting career, but due to her resilience, Jawbreaker has never had to be down-and-out of the game for long. …Although…there is this one thing— ahh, but we’ll save that for the background/personality section.

Appearance:

With her dedicated sporting background and brutal workout schedule, Jawbreaker is bulkier than your average mare, with legs packed-out with muscle giving her a stocky appearance. Her coat is off-white/creamy with a mauve tint to it, and speckled with red, blue and yellow “freckles”, which are most concentrated around Jawbreaker’s legs and face. Her eyes, mane and tail are similar shades of reddish-pink; her mane is quiffed and tied back into an unruly ponytail, while both her mane and tail transition from pink to orange towards the ends. She wears orange sweatbands on all four legs.

The cutie mark emblazoned upon both her flanks depicts a meteorite resembling a traditional jawbreaker (spherical and white, with red, blue and yellow speckles, just like the markings on her coat) with a trail of red, blue and yellow flames streaking behind it.

Background/Personality:

Why should that character be in this game:

At first I was unsure upon whether to app Jawbreaker to a game that already had Kelly (Pokemon OC and as of yet my only character) in it. Because of all the multitude of fandom OCs I could have chosen as a second act, Jawbreaker has the most similarities to Kelly. Similarities in appearance aside (can you tell that I have a thing for freckles, yet?), Jawbreaker and Kelly share very similar circumstances. Both lost a parent at a young age, and in both cases it had an effect on their ability to relate to one of the sexes (Kelly feeling unsure of herself in the presence of men, Jawbreaker not knowing how to approach ~girly girls~ and femininity as a whole); both are exceedingly dedicated to their areas of expertise, and both have difficulties fitting in when acting their natural selves.

What made me decide that it would be worth playing Jawbreaker and Kelly together in the same setting is that while these two share similar backgrounds and suffer the same anxieties, they both approach their problems in very different ways. Jawbreaker is much more honest about herself than Kelly, and her attempts to better herself in order to make friends are genuine, unlike Kelly who doesn’t see why she should need to change and thus attempts to fool people by putting on pretenses and showing them what they want to see.

The personalities of these two are completely removed from one-another, so hopefully nobody will get an unpleasant sense of déjà vu from tagging Jawbreaker. She’s an outgoing and chaotic bundle of friendly energy who could be a fair amount of fun if she were let loose on the Thor.

Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Do you though?
